The position: ILRI is recruiting Regional Research Associate position who will be based in Addis Ababa and who will be a member of the LIVES Project in ILRI-Ethiopia.


General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.


A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). www.ilri.org.


The Livestock and Irrigation Value-Chains for Ethiopian Smallholders (LIVES) project is an initiative designed by ILRI, IWMI (the international Water Management Institute) and their Ethiopian partners to enhance income and gender equitable wealth creation for smallholders and other value chain actors through increased and sustained market off- take of high-value livestock and irrigated crop commodities, It will design and implement interventions to improve market orientation of semi-commercial farmers for enhanced competitiveness, sustainability and equity in value chains in four regions of Ethiopia.


Key Responsibilities:


• In consultation with national, regional and LIVES research partners, coordinates the planning and implementation of regional diagnostic, action and impact research based on proposed value chain interventions;


• Makes arrangements with regional development partners Regional Agricultural Research institutes (RARI) and Agricultural Universities for joint implementation of research, including identification and involvement of thesis students;


• Leads the implementation of field data collection data entry and management;


• Analyzes research results and reports in different formats;


• Assists in the results-based Monitoring and Evaluation data collection, analysis and reporting;


• Contributes to capacity building of partners in research methods, market oriented extension, value chains and market analysis.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Education:


• MSc in extension, agricultural economics, agricultural marketing or closely related fields


Experience:


• At least 5 years’ experience in diagnostic, action and impact research


• Experience in capacity development


Skills:


• Understanding of value chain concepts


• Good analytical and English writing skills


• Good skills in statistical software application (SPSS, STATA)


• Good communication and partnership skills


• Good interpersonal skills


Duty Station: Addis Ababa


Grade: 2D


Minimum Base: Birr 19,078 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the selected candidate)


Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term up to 31 December 2016 with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.


The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
