Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) is one of the pioneer’s registered professional Associations established to represent midwives and midwifery profession in Ethiopia. It aims at contributing to the reduction of maternal and child morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Ethiopian midwives Association in collaboration with Jhpiego Ethiopia and other partners will implement USAID funded 5 years project titled Strengthening Human Resource for Health (HRH) in which Jhpiego will take the lead. The main goal of the project is to meet human resources for health program for Ethiopia. The HRH project will identify and provide financial assistance to support emergency placement of experienced midwifery professionals and experts to provide short-term technical assistance to selected universities and health science colleges with midwifery program with critical staff shortage, with the aim of improving midwifery training.

To achieve the objective mentioned above, Ethiopian Midwives Association is looking to hire competent and experienced professionals for the following vacant positions.


Vacancy number: EMwA 011/2015


1. Position: Midwife Tutors – Volunteer


Reports to:-Program Manager


Required Number:-Seven /7 /


Job Summary: – The midwife tutor will have an overall responsibility of instructing students to the highest educational quality by following their performance timely and filling their gaps in both theory and skill.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


• Instruct midwifery courses (in the classroom, skills lab and clinical)


• Assess students’ progress and performance


• Mentor existing less experienced staff on midwifery and teaching skills


• Support regular educational quality assessment and improvement efforts


• Present prepared materials, supervise organized skill lab activities, and record student progress


• Organize and present instructional materials in accordance with the College Catalogue descriptions, course syllabi and outlines, and class schedules


• Use the established syllabus and textbook for the course being taught.


• Maintain records of student attendance, student progress, and grade distributions


• Maintain discipline and order during instructional activities


• Do early assessment to analyze the field situation before field practice is commenced


• Develop a positive and respectful working relationship


• Meet standards of professional and ethical conduct in relation to students, and colleagues


• Follow professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, students’ records, and colleagues


• Demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills as they relate to interaction with students, other teachers, administrators, and other school personnel


• Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and file reports promptly


• Demonstrate professional practices in teaching


• Demonstrate accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content


• Maintain lesson plans as required by school policy


• Participate in professional development opportunities and apply the concepts to classroom and school activities


• Demonstrate appropriate personal contact while in performance of school duties


• Participate in professional development activities relevant to midwifery education & practice as required


• Provide supportive supervision as needed for individuals supervising students in practical settings


• Undertake any other duties as so requested by EMA and hosting institutions


• Works together with clinical preceptors and/or clinical staff to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved during practical placements


• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual report to EMwA.


Required qualifications, experience and skill:


• Postgraduate with clinical midwifery or post graduate with health related fields with background of midwifery is preferable and a minimum of three years clinical experience in MNCH/RH services


• B.Sc. in Midwifery with minimum of two years teaching experience in higher institutions and a minimum of three years clinical experience in MNCH/RH services


• Excellent communication skill both oral and writing skills


• Strong interpersonal skill and ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.


Duty Station:- Jigjiga University, Semera Health Science College, Deber Tabor Health Science College, Pawe Health Science College, Negelle Health Science College, Gode Health Science College, and Metu Health Science College.


2. Position: Clinical Preceptor (Clinical Instructor) –Volunteer


Reports to:-Program Manager


Number required: One


Job summary: – The clinical preceptor is responsible for the improvement of the service quality delivered to the clients of the facility by coaching and mentoring the midwifery students and the staff at the expected standard of practices.
Major duties and responsibilities:


• Coach and mentor midwifery students during clinical practicum.


• Assess students’ progress and performance during clinical practicum.


• Mentor clinical staff to improve their midwifery and preceptor ship skills.


• Provide high quality MNCH/RH services to clients and patients coming to the facility.


• Support regular clinical service quality assessment and improvement efforts.


• Ensure quality of the learning in a practice setting.


• Serve as a liaison between the clinical setting and the school of midwifery.


• Assess students’ competencies.


• Direct, mange & evaluate student learning in clinical setting.


• Supervise, support and guide students in practice.


• Implement approved assessment procedures.


• Have the ability to select, support and assess a range of learning opportunities in students’ area of practice.


• Support learning in an inter-professional environment — selecting and supporting a range of learning opportunities for students from other professions.


• Contribute to the assessment of other professionals


• Provide the appropriate knowledge base for midwifery interventions.


• Provide structured learning program during practice placements.


• Act as a role model.


• Undertake any other duties as requested by EMwA and hosting institutions.


• Work together with tutors to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved during practical placements.


• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual report to EMwA.


Job Requirements


Required qualifications and experience:


• Bachelor’s degree in midwifery (preferable) with a minimum of three years clinical experience in MNCH/RH services and experience as clinical preceptor ship is advantageous.


• Diploma in midwifery and bachelor’s degree in nursing or health officer and a minimum of six years clinical experience in MNCH/RH services and experience in clinical preceptor ship is advantageous.

Borena Health Science College, Gode Health Science College, and Metu
Health Sciende College- and Afar: Semera Health Science College-For Position Number 2


Salary: as per the organization scale


Duration: For both position one year with possibility of extension based on the performance.
