Extension Field Officer Job at Nuru International Ethiopia - 2015


 Organization Background:


Nuru International Ethiopia is a US-based international NGO working to end extreme poverty in rural communities in Africa. Nuru’s first integrated development project in Ethiopia began in 2013 in Boreda Woreda, GamoGofa Zone, SNNPR. Nuru currently works in four integrated intervention areas—two of which are part of the Rural Livelihoods Impact Program – Agriculture and Financial Inclusion. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Extension Field Officer who can implement the two Rural Livelihoods Impact Programs and develop primary cooperatives in communities.

Terms and conditions:  initially for six months contract. Then, the appointment will be for a long-term fixed employment based on annual contract extensions depending on performance.


POSITION SUMMARY 


The Nuru Extension Field Officer is responsible for carrying out the overall program goals and objectives for the Agriculture and Financial Inclusion programs facilitating original training modules on financial literacy and best agronomic practices, supervising community animators, developing grain marketing cooperatives, and collecting and report all data information. They must also understand and carry out the Nuru model.


Further, s/he will foster organizational development, promote Nuru’s values and servant leadership culture, promote accountability and high performance, and encourage innovation. S/he will ensure all cooperatives are progressing Nuru’s goal of allowing rural communities to realize meaningful choices to lift themselves out of extreme poverty in a sustainable way.


Responsibility:


 Manage and supervise Community Animators


Manage a team of three or four community animators, set defined expectations, provide leadership and technical support as needed, and evaluate direct reports accordinglyEnsure Community Animators are coordinated, integrated and support each other to optimize impactMentor, empower, train and build the capacity of your Community Animators both technically and managerially Ensuring Community Animators are collecting and reporting all monitoring indicator data effectively and efficiently

 Technical Trainer


Accountable for the delivery of high-quality technical programming in line with the objectives of each program goal and Nuru VisionTrain community animators and cooperative leaders on facilitation techniques to develop their ability to best disseminate trainings to all cooperative members Provide technical assistance and spot-checks for households as needed for best agronomic practices, savings, and IGAs
  Cooperative DevelopmentStrengthen the quality of your cooperatives by identifying areas in which programs may benefit from technical assistance, professional development, and/or training workshopsMaintain good relationships with cooperative leaders and members, and government officesAttend and observe monthly cooperative leader meetingsSupport the cooperative manager through the cooperative expert in preparation and disbursement of agriculture inputs, and IGA and agriculture loan agreementsSupport the cooperative manager through the cooperative expert in withdrawals and disbursement of IGA loan capital injections, and loan agreements

Report to Field Specialist


Ensure programs are implemented according to plans and budgets and that activities are executed in line with Nuru’s quality solution criteria (sustainability, impact and scalability) in ways that are responsive to communities’ needsPrepare high quality progress reports and ensure they are submitted on timeWork with the Monitoring and Evaluation team and CA to gather all requested dataTake initiative and hold others accountable to deliver ambitious goals toward ending extreme povertyFollow up and report on all monitoring indicator data, i.e. loan repayment, savings, business plan creation, input issue, and other information as requestedAssist FI and AG experts, Logistics Manager, and Education and Healthcare programs as needed, i.e. scouting new kebeles, market research surveys, all material distribution, creating care groups, and book banksPrepare and submit monthly and weekly plans and reportsUndertake other assignment given by their SupervisorInforming Nuru Ethiopia on issues concerning gender awareness in their service areasParticipate in weekly team meetings and one-on-ones with the Field ManagerAttend trainings hosted by Nuru Ethiopia



Qualification Requirements:


 Bachelor’s in a degree related to Agriculture, preferably in Plant Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture Extension/Economics, and Rural Development  At least 2 years of practical experience in development sectors, specifically with an agricultural focus – at least 1 year of field work preferable. Experience working on wheat, teff, maize and haricot beans are highly are preferredExperience or training in income generating activities, finance, business or accounting, cooperative management is advantageous.Good understanding of community development, the poverty cycle, rural livelihoods, and NGO program cycle managementBe knowledgeable and have experience working with local and national government policies on cooperatives and women groupsAble to demonstrate servant leadership, a passion for development work, and the ability to inspire others to achieve organizational goalsExcellent inter personal communication, presentation, negotiation and decision-making skills.Ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervisionFluency in English, Amharic and Gommugna (or Wolaytigna) is required. Knowledge of operational areas is advantageous.
