PROJECT COORDINATOR
 
Empowering Students with Disabilities in Ethiopian Universities


The Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) Association was established and registered with the Ministry of Justice in December 2005.  Following the Charities and Societies Proclamation of 2009, ECDD was registered by the Charities and Societies Agency on 3 November 2009 and re-registered on 6 December 2012 as an Ethiopian Residents Charity. ECDD has 60 Association members, a 7-member Board of Directors, and 20 staff members, the majority being persons with disabilities.  ECDD works collaboratively with other organizations to promote and facilitate “disability inclusive development” in Ethiopia – the inclusion of disability issues and persons with disabilities in mainstream government service delivery and development organization programs.
 
ECDD has a Partnership Agreement with the Threshold Association of Finland to facilitate the support, empowerment and effective inclusion of students with disabilities and their associations in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Mekele and Gonder Universities, with the prospect of including additional universities in Ethiopia in 2016 and beyond. ECDD now seeks to employ a Project Coordinator, who will be responsible for the overall planning, implementation and supervision of the ECDD/Threshold Partnership Project.


General Description


The ECDD Project Coordinator reports to the ECDD Program Director and is responsible for organizing and carrying out all activities of the ECDD –Threshold Partnership Agreement. Specifically, the project coordinator will:


1.    Prepare Annual Work Plan for the implementation of the activities of the Threshold Foundation funded project;


2.    Effectively implement activities according to the Work Plan within the given time period;


3.    Assist the Presidents, respective Dean of Students, and the Disability Centers of Addis Ababa University (AAU), Hawassa University, Mekele University and Gonder Universities to increase the number of disabled students at each university, ensure easy access to buildings, facilities and courses, and facilitate their studies;


4.    Assist the AAU, Hawassa, Mekele and Gonder disabled students Associations to plan, organize and implement an annual program of activities to raise awareness among university students and faculty members of the situation and needs of students with disabilities;


5.    Plan, facilitate and implement awareness-raising training activities for personnel of participating organizations;


6.    Build the capacity of disability centers in AAU, Hawassa, Gonder and Mekele universities to enable them provide disability inclusive services for disabled students in their respective universities;


7.    Work in close collaboration with other Threshold partners in Ethiopia including the Federation of Ethiopian National Associations of Persons with Disabilities (FENAPD), Ethiopian National Association of the Deaf and the Blind (ENADB), Ethiopian Women with Disabilities National Association (EWDNA) and Women with Disabilities for Change (WWDC);


8.    Represent ECDD and participate in meetings, workshops, seminars and training courses organized by government and development NGOs concerning the inclusive education of persons with disabilities and capacity building initiatives not covered by other specific projects of ECDD;


9.    Prepare and submit progress reports as specified in the project document to ECDD and Threshold Association;


10. Undertake such other tasks as may be assigned by the Program Director and/or the Executive Director.




1.    Education – minimum MA degree in a social science field


2.    Professional experience – minimum 5 years of responsibility for the implementation of donor-funded project(s)


3.    Work experience in the area of inclusive education desirable


4.    Previous professional experience working with persons with disabilities desirable


5.    Excellent interpersonal relationships and team work


6.    Excellent communication skills


7.    Able and willing to travel frequently to the target regions/cities


8.    Competence in the use of computer applications


9.    Fluency in English and Amharic, with knowledge of other Ethiopian languages desirable
