Organizational Setting ad Reporting Relationships: The nurse reports to the Medical Officer both of whom report administratively to the UNHCR head of Sub Office and technically are supervised by the Chief Medical Officer at the UN Health Care Centre in Addis Ababa.


Responsibilities: Within delegated authority, the nurse is responsible for the following duties:


- Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officer in providing adequate care; ensures effective liaison between patient and doctor or family members, and colleagues as appropriate,


- Documents case findings.


- Assists the Medical Officer in stabilizing serious patients and accompany them to Addis Ababa on medical evacuations.


- Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: EGG, laboratory rapid tests using test kits.


- In the absence of the Medical Officer, provides routine care to the clients.


- Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly before the patient sees the UN Medical Officer or travels to medical facilities outside the duty station, as indicated.


- Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit where available.


- Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.


- Assist the Medical officer in cost recovery and deposits such to the UNHCR Station Head for onward transmission to UNHCC.


- Dispenses medications and keep proper records and place orders for replenishment of stock.


- Regularly check stock for expiration


- Reports any problems with the medical equipments and ensures regular maintenance.


- Accompany patients on Medical evacuations when necessary.


- Performs other related duties as required.

- Personnel in UNHCC


- Security officers


- Physicians and nurses outside the UN


- Delegates and NGO Representatives


- Visitors

- Provides quality nursing services that contribute to the good physical and mental health of the staff of the UN Organisations.


Competencies:


Professionalism: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge, of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Knowledge of modern medical information technology and solid computer skill. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
