We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of: Youth Employment & Livelihoods Specialist, Addressing Child Labor in Ethiopia

Project Description:

FHI 360 is recruiting for a new program in Ethiopia to address exploitative child labor by helping youth ages 14 to 17, with a focus on female youth, develop marketable skills to secure decent work that is appropriate for their age and serve as leaders in their communities. The project will promote education and vocational training opportunities for youth and also will seek to enhance livelihoods and access to social protection programs for youth and their households.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Project Director, Youth Employment & Livelihoods Specialist will be responsible for enhancing livelihoods for youth and their households involving interventions that could include one or more of the following: savings programs; micro-insurance; micro-franchising; linkages to micro-lending programs; village savings and loans programs; life-skills training; linkages to adult literacy programs; and linkages to financial literacy programs. The Youth Employment & Livelihoods Specialist will also aim to promote decent work opportunities for youth through interventions that include some of the following strategies: job placement support; internships; apprenticeships; entrepreneurship training and support; assisting youth in the use of job-search methods, including registering at an employment center and/or answering job advertisements; increasing youths’ awareness of occupational safety and health and other labor standards issues; linking youth to programs that promote decent work; transitioning youth from exploitative and/or dangerous work into decent work, including by addressing occupational safety and health issues and/or reducing hours of work or involvement in prohibited types of work or work during restricted periods of the day (such as night work) in conformity with international standards and national laws; supporting efforts to improve reporting on labor law violations; and partnerships with employers and unions who promote decent work for youth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide technical leadership in community engagement and leadership opportunities for youth.With technical oversight, provide technical leadership in design, development, planning, implementation; and capacity- building in vocational training.Participate in resource development activities.Responsible for accomplishing assigned job responsibilities, and following the standards and practices of the department and division.Responsible for planning and scheduling own work flow and timetables, within area and function guidelines.Identify areas for improved efficiency or effectiveness within prescribed parameters, and institutes enhancements to procedures.Maintain a constructive dialogue and technical exchange with field counterparts and technical staff of implementing partners.Develop and maintains collaborative relationships with donor/client organizations, relevant government agencies, bilateral and other NGOs.Develop tools for the design and implementation of specific technical components.Ensures that project implementation adheres to the appropriate global strategy and remains technically sound.

Skills and Experience:

University degree in economics, international development, or related field of study; Master’s Degree preferred.Minimum of three years of experience in a leadership position responsible for developing youth employment and livelihood interventions, including life skills training, micro-lending, savings programs, micro-insurance, micro-franchising, village savings and loan programs, financial literacy, adult literacy, employment generation, alternative/additional income generation, youth apprenticeships, internships, job placement support, modern job search methods training, entrepreneurship, occupational safety and health training, and labor market analysis.Experience in projects promoting livelihood interventions and youth employment in Ethiopia.Understanding of child labor issues, including youth employment.Experience working successfully with government agencies and private organizations engaged in promoting improved livelihoods for households and youth employment programs.Experience working with relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, employers, and unions.Fluency in Amharic required. Knowledge of English preferred.
