Job Description

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and as a force for positive social change. To achieve this, the BBC Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats, based on robust research, which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.  Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

BBC Media Action – Ethiopia is implementing a project on indoor air pollution to increase awareness and discussion of the health impacts caused by traditional cooking methods in rural parts of Oromia. The project is designed to use a new radio drama and a series of PSAs to address the problem.

Overall Purpose of Job

 We are looking for Production Coordinator who will be responsible to manage all aspects of production logistics – including planning, pre-production, production and post-production – as needed, with an initial focus on the 26-episode radio drama production in Afan Oromo. This job involves working both on location (recording set, town hall meetings, etc.) and in the office.

 Main Duties:

 Responsibilities and Duties:

• Manage all aspects of production logistics, with a special initial focus on our drama productions. Work with other teams as needed, and report to the Executive Editor.


• Oversee the logistic aspects of delivering of productions on schedule and within budget pre, during and post production.

Pre-production responsibilities include:

• Work with project managers, Senior Producer/Trainer, Head of Drama, drama teams and the Project Manager to create production schedules, timelines and budgets.


• Oversee location booking and arrangement of necessary permits.


• Oversee travel logistics, and logistical needs while working for us.


• Manage the studio, including scheduling of use.

Production responsibilities include:

• Take overall responsibility for the running and the management of the production set or other locations in order to deliver the production on schedule. Oversee the production management team as they work on set and work with other teams as needed.


• Oversee the management of production resources and help solve any issues that may arrive from lack of equipment, multiple concurrent recordings, etc.


• Lead on troubleshooting/dealing with any unexpected logistic, safety, equipment, etc. and help come up with solutions and/or alternative plans.


• Ensure production teams adhere to health and safety regulations.

Post-production responsibilities include:

• Oversee the management of post-production resources to help solve any issues that may arrive during post-production.


• Follow up with producers to ensure programs are ready in time for transmission.


• Prepare all necessary paperwork etc. for payments to freelancers, and follow up with Finance and others as needed to ensure payment is made.


• Ensure copyright laws are followed and where necessary arrange permit

Other responsibilities include:

• Identify production capacity and equipment gaps, and work with Senior Producer/Trainer, Executive Editor and others as needed to fill these gaps.


• Advice on productions and budgets during proposal writing, as needed.


• Management of production master calendar.

REPORTS TO: Executive Editor, Ethiopia                          

 DURATION: 8 months (with possible extension)          

CONTRACT: Local terms and conditions.  Only eligible for Ethiopian Nationals or those legally able to work in Ethiopia

Required skills, knowledge and experience    

•  Relevant TV/radio production management experience.


• A good first degree in a related field would be an asset.


• Good computer skills.  Other technical production skills would be an asset.


• Ability to communicate with accuracy and clarity
