ABOUT THE PARTNER ORGANIZATION

Sebeta Teacher Training College is a relatively new institution that focuses on Special Needs education

and English Language training. The College has partnered with VSO Ethiopia and Cuso International,

through this placement, to build the capacity of its teaching staff.

THE VOLUNTEER'S ROLE

Overall placement purpose and specific placement objectives:

The overall purpose of the placement will be to support the establishment of an ELIC in the college and to

focus on developing the skills of Ethiopian colleagues, teachers and students, and encouraging them in

learning and personal development (commitment to learning).

Specific Objectives:

• Provide ELT and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training for academic and support staff and

students by carrying out learning needs assessments.

• Deliver methodology training in required areas, e.g. materials development, visual aids etc.

• Work alongside the Higher Diploma Program (HDP) and Academic Development and Resource

Centre (ADRC) initiatives, which are both focused on continuous professional development (CPD) of

teacher educators across the Ethiopian education system.

• Provide management and advisory support to the implementation of ELIP and other related CPD

programs at the Teacher Training College and surrounding schools.

• Develop materials for the next phase of ELIP training in materials development

• Conduct monitoring and evaluation of ELIP and knowledge sharing with relevant ELIP stakeholders

• Promote personal and professional development through action research and developing portfolios

• Participate in ELIP workshops and conferences and working with a team of volunteers and

Ethiopians who are assigned to the program across Ethiopia

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential requirements

• A minimum of a Bachelor degree, ideally in English or modern languages, with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or qualification in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or a related field.

• Experience in Special Needs Education

• Excellent English language oral and written skills • Experience of active learning, student centred teaching and continuous assessment

• Ability to work with limited resources and practical problem solving skills. • Flexible and willing and able to work in partnership with other English Language Improvement Centre

(ELIC) Coordinators.

Desirable requirements:

• First-hand experience in training teachers

• Ability to undertake baseline and impact studies • Experience of staff development; working with a team of colleagues to introduce and manage

classroom change.

• Strong proficiency in IT and use of technical equipment

TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a

modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:

• Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates must cover the first $150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs).

• Travel and accommodation costs associated with pre-departure training. • Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency).

• Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and comprehensive health insurance. • Accommodation while overseas.

• A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed • Quarterly payments to support you in your placement • Modest support for accompanying partners
