May 28, 2012 — Haile Gebrselassie failed to qualify for the 10,000 meters at the London Games on Sunday, finishing outside the top two of the Ethiopian qualifiers at the FBK Games, according to AP report.
Gebrselassie had already failed to make it among the marathon qualifiers and had a fleeting hope he could go through in the 10,000, where he won gold in 1996 and 2000.
Tariku Bekele won Sunday’s race. Brother Kenenisa Bekele, the 2004 and ‘08 Olympic champion, will likely get the Ethiopian wild card for London.
In the 400, 18-year-old Santos Luguelin of the Dominican Republic set the second-best time of the season, with 44.45 seconds, trailing only American LaShawn Merritt. On Sunday, he beat Martyn Rooney of Britain.
Asked to comment on his run, "I was wondering if I can run, you know, just the top three, but it did not work," Gebreselassie told Reuters. "The last 400m it was not good for me."
Gebreselassie admitted his Olympic dream had died. "That's over, yeah," he said. "No more."
