Background / General description

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is one of the world’s leading international sources of financing for private sector investment in development countries with a mandate to reduce poverty and improve people’s lives. IFC finances private sector investments, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides technical assistance and advice to governments and businesses in its member countries. Investment Officers (IOs) work with IFC clients and lead multidisciplinary teams which consist of lawyers, economist, environmental and social specialists, as well as technical specialists. The IFC’s Sub-Saharan Africa Region, is seeking to recruit an Associate/Investment Officer based in Addis Ababa, to provide business development support in Ethiopia and other countries of the Horn of Africa (Djibouti and Somalia). The position will report to the Resident Representative and will work closely with the Africa business development team and industry departments with the objective of securing good investments in the sub-region, gathering market intelligence and establishing strong relationships within governments and the business communities. The job will involve a significant amount of travel in the sub-region.

Duties and Accountabilities

Proactively identify business opportunities and develop a strong pipeline of good quality investment proposals in the region; Evaluate/analyze the attractiveness of potential investments; Participate in the structuring and negotiations of deals; Develop a thorough understanding of the above countries, provide market intelligence and knowledge and develop strong business network; Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and government officials to facilitate investments, assisting with strategy formulation, and maintain collaborative working relationship with other private business, banking and multilateral partners in the countries concerned; Participate in project teams to accomplish work as required on several projects simultaneously; Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and technical assistance colleagues in order to add value to our clients' businesses, find pragmatic solutions to the specific sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact. Actively market and utilize IFC’s Advisory Service offer – Private Enterprise Partnerships (PEP) Africa and other donor funded facilities.

Selection Criteria

MBA or equivalent qualification. At least 5 years’ experience in project finance or the banking sector including promotion and processing of investments with good knowledge, networks and credibility within the investment community. Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments (debt and equity) Experience of and interest in IFC’s non-financial products including IFC’s Advisory Services. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral; Amharic and/or French is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, design and implement projects and to close transactions. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and develop good relationships. Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of potential clients, of financial and technical partners as well as senior government officials Strong sense of service to clients, openness to feedback and to new ideas. Ability to work in a team, to interact effectively with client and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds and deliver high quality work within deadlines, and to meet team objectives.
