WEB COMPUTING SPECIALIST - University of Washington Medical Center - Seattle, WA

The University of Washington (UW) is proud to be one of the nation’s premier educational and research institutions. Our people are the most important asset in our pursuit of achieving excellence in education, research and community service. Our staff not only enjoys outstanding benefits and professional growth opportunities, but also an environment noted for diversity, community involvement, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty.

The Department of Global Health was established in 2007, bridging the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all UW schools and colleges. Driven by tremendous interest among both students and faculty, the Department has grown explosively to more than 400 graduate students and hundreds more undergraduates. DGH has more than 280 faculty and 1,000 staff working on projects across 93 countries with deepest ties in Peru, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia.

The Department of Global Health has an immediate opening for a Web Computing Specialist . The role is responsible for technical maintenance of the department’s website (http://globalhealth.washington.edu) as well as supporting an expanding portfolio of sites for the grant-funded Centers, Programs, and Initiatives (CPIs) within the department. This is an ideal role for someone with a broad range of web skills and specific knowledge of site building with Drupal and WordPress, the two most common platforms used in department websites.

This role will be instrumental in helping create processes and system that ensure the sites are well-maintained in an efficient way, ideally in such a way that allows non-technical program staff to focus strictly on managing content on their websites.

While there are needs for new sites, the emphasis on new development is primary. The role calls for someone who enjoys solving the problems unique to maintaining a wide range of sites, and solving technical problems related to their maintenance, security, and performance, as well as advising about optimal ways to design and present information on the web.

Working under the Managing Director of the Department’s E-learning Program (eDGH), the role will collaborate with the department’s Communications team and other staff. The eDGH team works on creating online courses for the department and e-learning development for grant-funded training programs. This role will contribute to any web needs for those projects, such as building small websites for delivery of specific training projects, and extending the eDGH portal (http://edgh.washington.edu).

Develop and manage web sites and web-based information
Technical management of redesign of Department’s website, updating from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7. The redesign has been contracted to an outside vendor. This role will serve as liaison between the stakeholders in the department and the vendor.

Support a decentralized network of websites for CPIs, efficiently managing software and security updates and ensuring that sites are well-functioning

Build and maintain Department-branded Drupal and WordPress templates for CPIs
Train staff and faculty to manage their own information on the web
Provide support and training for faculty and staff using educational technology
