SUMMARY

The Regional Business Development Officer coordinates proposal development and grants acquisition in the East and Southern Africa Region (ESA) for ChildFund. He/she assists in building the agency’s profile, pre-positioning National and Regional Offices and strengthening NO proposal grants acquisition capacity in country offices, as assigned. The position supports National Offices acquisition of high-value awards from US Government and other bilaterals, multilaterals and the private sector.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads the development of cost and technical proposals. Supports the writing/development of concept papers and proposals to respond to specific solicited and unsolicited funding opportunities of high value grants for ESA countries and monitors proposal quality. Follows- up submissions of proposals with effective liaison with donors, as permitted, and ensure that donor questions and concerns are fully addressed on time.Cultivates strong connections linkages or relationship between national offices, USG agencies and other major bilateral/multilateral and private sector donors. Keeps the organization informed of new funding opportunities and the strategic objectives of donor missions in country. Promotes positive partnerships to access new opportunities and advocates for the same on behalf of ChildFund within ESA.Provides strategic leadership for intelligence gathering and pre-positioning efforts. Researches and analyzes funding trends among key donors/clients. Regularly updates and communicates with National Offices (NO’s) on strategic funding opportunities.Strengthens Regional and NO grant-acquisition capacity, including developing of training materials and training of NO staff in key aspects of grant acquisition.Provides strategic leadership for the ESA region in identifying and analyzing donor calls for funding applications, expressions of interest and request for proposals from the public and private sector. Supports national offices in assessing opportunities and, with relevant staff, assures that appropriate support is available to grant writing efforts within NO’s.Coordinates with the ESA Region to increase the competitive readiness of National Offices, writing capacity statements and supporting pre-positioning efforts set by the Global Grants Team.Builds and maintains positive working relationships with Childfund staff, particularly in the Africa Region and within the Business Development Unit.Contributes to the design of business development processes, tools and templates for ChildFund and supports their use by proposal development staff in relevant areas.

Required Skills

Demonstrated budgeting skillsProven track record of obtaining large US Government and other major donor awards; thorough understanding of key donor rules and regulationsPrior experience working in the development sectorStrong analytical and forecasting skillsDemonstrated oral, written communication and presentation skillsExperience in training, coaching and/or mentoring project staff in quality proposal developmentDemonstrated ability to build relationships, work collaboratively within a growing organization and within broader external coalitionsProficiency in relevant computer applications (spreadsheets, database, accounting operations software, project management software, presentation software)Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work autonomously under deadlinesAdvanced written and oral fluency in English requiredAbility to travel frequently in East and Southern Africa and occasionally beyond Africa.

Experience Required

5-7 years experience in successful grant proposal writing, particularly from US Government and other bilateral/multilateral donors. Experience with private sector donors is an added advantage.Bachelor’s degree in International Development or other relevant field required (MA preferred).How to apply:
