Share Our Strength
Our Priority: Ending Childhood Hunger in America

More than 16 million children in America live in households that struggle to put food on the table. That’s 1 in 5 children who struggle with hunger. Learn more .

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign strives to end childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. We connect kids with meal programs in their communities, teach their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals, and engage with both the public and private sectors to making ending childhood hunger a national priority.

We see a future where kids have access to the healthy food they need, every day – where they get a healthy breakfast every day at school so they’re ready to learn, and they won’t have to worry about how they’re going to eat when school is out for the summer when the safety net of school meals isn’t available to them. We are seeing and experiencing incredible success. Since the launch of our campaign, we’ve helped connect kids in need to 107 million additional meals, and we are just getting started.

Fueling our dramatic growth is a multi-platform, year-round cause campaign that raises awareness, generates revenue, and rallies a national movementin support of the issue of childhood hunger. These include a multi-city culinary event series, grassroots engagement opportunities, a national Dine Out month, a dynamic social media community, and a 6-years and growing partnership with Food Network. We’re fortunate to work with hundreds of top chefs and culinary professionals, many of the nation’s most trusted brands and media outlets, and a growing community of over 700,000 individuals who have taken the No Kid Hungry pledge since the campaign’s launch in 2011.

The entire Share Our Strength team is highly motivated by our mission to feed kids across the country. Over the last 30 years, we have created a culture that is focused on making a significant difference in children’s lives, encourages innovation, promotes collaboration with external partners and fellow colleagues, strives to deliver substantial impact and results, and provides opportunities for team members to develop their careers in a dynamic organization that is constantly evolving and, in many cases, leading industry best practices.

Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in response to the ‘84-‘85 famine in Ethiopia. Brother and sister Bill and Debbie Shore started the organization with the belief that everyone has a way to help in the global fight against hunger and poverty, and that in these shared strengths lie sustainable solutions. Today we focus these strengths on making No Kid Hungry a reality in America. We are currently a $50M organization, and our goal is to increase our size to at least $100M within the next five years.

California Regional Director of Development Overview

In this newly created position, you will report to the Senior Director of Development (who in turn reports to the Chief Development Officer) and be responsible for growing individual major gifts in California from the current $1.5M to our goal of $3M over the next three years. To help you achieve that, you will work with our current California-based team of three staff members who bring extensive experience building fundraising events, managing chef, donor, and volunteer relations, and building community for No Kid Hungry across the state of California. You will also have the extensive resources of headquarters, including a donor operations team focused on data and research, compelling communications tools and resources led by a best-in-class brand and communications team, a culinary events operations and chef strategy team, expert finance and human resources colleagues, and the support of our executive leadership team. The Executive Team is highly motivated and willing to be used as a development and cultivation resource. While we have historically managed our national fundraising efforts from our D.C. office, our plans for growth require dedicating additional resources to specific geographic locations. Currently in California we are raising $1.5M through events, sponsorship, and individual donors. We have a pipeline in place to create leads through membership and events. You will create the strategic vision to harness the existing pipeline as well as to continue to strengthen it. There is tremendous potential in this market which we have barely begun to tap.

We will support your technology needs in a home-based office, and your territory will include the entire state of California. We see tremendous potential, especially in LA and Silicon Valley. You will also work collaboratively with your peers in other regional locations to information-share and develop best practices.
