Overall Responsibility

Working and reporting to External Relations Manager (ERM) the senior External Relations officer is responsible to build, maintain and manage the reputation, visibility and network of MSIE among relevant stakeholders through the utilization of all forms of media and communication mechanisms and strategies to ultimately support the achievement of Country goals.
I. Public Relations Guideline and Periodic Publications:
· Completion of a PR strategy within the first six month of the assignment.
· Develop a yearly action plan for public relations activities.
· Draft and produce information packets (press kits, briefing papers, fact sheets, etc.) on MSIE’s activities by liaising with project and other program staff.
· Compile data, best practices, and success stories from different MSIE units to develop and disseminate a quarterly newsletter.
· Develop and maintain a database of all media groups, both of national and foreign correspondence.
· Develop and maintain an annual event planner indicating all the important events, conferences, campaigns, advocacy platforms for MSIE’s participation.
II. MSIE’s communication and public relations activities:
· Draft press releases and media alerts for all MSIE events and activities.
· Responsible for media relations and issuing of information packets for all public relations activities.
· Initiate the briefing and provision of, with prior approval, resources and information to media representatives and other stakeholders.
· Contribute to MSI Ethiopia’s promotional and public relations work including attending events, conferences, and all other meetings relevant to the work of MSIE.
· Ensure at least one article on MSIE is placed in a major print medium per month, one report per quarter in a major radio station and one feature per year in national television.
· Conduct ongoing media monitoring on MSIE in particular and on family planning/sexual reproductive health coverage in Ethiopia and write up a summary or reflection on the coverage.
· Provide technical advice and support to different program units on how to align activities towards greater visibility and strengthened relationship with media and other stakeholders.
· Participate and represent the organization in relevant national and international events that contribute to building organizational image and goodwill.
· Document and maintain Country Office activities using video, photo and electronic presentations.
· Ensure media presence during various MSIE events, campaigns and activities.
III. Website/Social Media Management:
· Develop, in collaboration with Marketing and Program unit, content for MSIE website and manage the information accordingly.
· Ensure MSIE’s website link is publicized through partners and other stakeholders’ website.
· Actively engage MSIE to take part in promotion and public relation through social media; as well as monitor MSI global and MSIE website and social media activities.
IV. Partnership:
· Closely collaborate with the Communication and PR Department within the Government agencies, particularly with Federal and Regional Health Bureaus.
· Collaborate and maintain good working relationships with regional based media.
· Ensure MSIE is invited to all major stakeholder forums.
Required Qualification
· Educational Qualification
BA Degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Administration or related field.
· Experience
At least 8 years directly relevant experience, possibly working in media or within the development sector in communication and public relations.
· Additional Skills Required
Experience in writing, editing, proof-reading and designing communication documents for public dissemination. Familiarity with relevant information technology, including Facebook and website content management. Excellent written and oral communication skills, conveying messages to different audiences using diverse media. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with media and other stakeholders. Extremely fluent written and spoken English are essential Understanding of public health in general Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel , PowerPoint and Outlook High level of interpersonal communication & negotiation skills Strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines
