Head of Public Private Partnerships Job at African Bamboo Plc - 2015


You are interested in working in the field of private sector development in a developing country? You are keen on gaining experience in the field and bring a lot of enthusiasm and management capability? If you have also wondered how you can build up an industry from scratch in one of the poorest countries in the world with the initial support of public private partnerships, we would be highly interested in getting to know you.


We are: 


African Bamboo PLC is a forestry, wood processing and bio-energy company, primarily using bamboo as feedstock established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia since 2012. We are a daughter company of Fortune Enterprise PLC, a privately owned firm engaged in wood and metal furniture manufacturing in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia has a shortage of wood, but accounts for 67 percent of Africa’s entire bamboo resources with about 1 million ha of bamboo coverage. Hence, Fortune Enterprise decided to gradually shift its raw material source to bamboo and transform the production from wood furniture to high-value composite bamboo products such as compressed panels and outdoor decking for export purpose. It is the objective of AB, primarily using bamboo as feedstock, to optimize the multi-purpose benefits of the immense bamboo resources available in Ethiopia. The project 


In the last four years, in collaboration with key development partners including: GiZ, USAID, AfDB and Dutch PSI we have undertaken research and development establishing core foundations of the business. Key investments have enabled AB to accomplish core competency in the following area: (1). Product Development Innovation Centre (PDIC) /prototype line was set up to improve the production process and quality of bamboo panels; (2). Product testing and production process protocols; (3). Establishment of Integrated Supply. (4). Market development. (5). Sustainable management and utilization of the immense potential of Ethiopia’s bamboo resources. At current, we are working to secure additional financing for the development of industrial processing plant to produce quality Woven Strand Board for international export market. 


Main tasks are: 


Oversee project related grants from inception to completion, and ensure that all project related income and expenditure is in line with agreed activities, outputs and objectives of the projectEnsure that all financial transactions and reporting procedures are compliant with the specific financial requirements of all fundersMaintain transparent detailed reporting system to enable colleagues, management and external parties to understand relevant budgets and activitiesPrepare financial and narrative report for management, donors and auditorsCreate and monitor budgets; prepare periodic budget projections and report to management Keep effective files and correctly maintained original records of expenditure Develop, implement and maintain system for verifying expenditure incurred Liaise with partners and funders on regular basis in order to accommodate unforeseen variations in project activity and/or project costs and respond accordingly.

A Young Professional with some years of experience (internship/work) as project manager or program coordinator. You have a University degree in a relevant field (Development Studies, Project Management, African Regional Studies or any other relevant field) and excellent management and communication skills in English. Exposure to project life cycle management, ability to work independently, ability to troubleshoot and solve problems, excellent IT skills, ability to present complex information electronically and in-person to range of audience, experience in a developing country and experience with public private partnerships will make you the perfect candidate to join the team.
