The Position: The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate who will be a member of IWMI staff at its office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provides technical support in setting ‘up field studies for monitoring activities, including irrigation! agronomy, hydrology, sediment transport, and groundwater
• Collects, manages and summarizes data across scales from on-farm field trials to instrumented watersheds;
• Prepares model Inputs from GIS and remote sensing data;
• Assists in preparing project progress reports;
• Assists graduate students; supervise daily workers and data collectors in IWMI instrumented catchments and field sites when needed;
• Supports all hydrological/agronomic/irrigation modeling and related, activities in liaison with IWMI staff and other CG centers as well as with NARS and development partners in Ethiopia;
• Supports literature review on topics related to hydrology, soils, climate change, sediment transport, biogeochemical cycles and other water resources related fields;
• Performs other duties as required.
Skills and Competencies:
• Ability to work in a multi-national team and willingness to travel throughout Ethiopia and potentially other East Africa regions when needed (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda);
• Ability to consider a holistic ecosystem services approach from farm to landscape;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required;
• Excellent computer skills (MS Office, Windows etc.);
• Willingness to work in the field
• Detail oriented and organized;
• Flexible approach to work
• Data entry and analysis skills (Access, Excel, SAS, R);
• Excellent social skills, collaborative style, and ability to multi-task effectively;
• Proactive, innovative and creative attitudes;
• Advanced GIS skills will be considered a plus.
Education:
• Master of Science degree in an Environmental or Natural Resources field such as Environmental Engineering, Soil Science, Hydrology, Forestry, Rangeland Ecology, Agronomy, or other earth systems science.
Training: Basic hydrological modelling skills as evidences through course work or training.
Experience:
• At least 2 years of relevant work experience preferably with some background in engineering or demonstrated hydrological modelling;
• Good experience using ArcGlS;
• Demonstrated knowledge & experience in water resources and small-scale irrigation issues in Ethiopia;
• A working knowledge of the data needs of commonly used models such as SWAT, Mike-SHE would be advantageous
• Publication in peer reviewed journals would also be an advantage.
Duty Station: Addis Ababa
Grade: 2D
Birr: 19,078 (Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
