Psychologist (M/F)

Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors without Borders or MSF) is a private, non-profit, international humanitarian medical organization that intervenes in emergencies and crisis situations to relieve human suffering resulting from unmet medical needs. 

 


 


PLACE: Gambela project, Gambela region.                             
DURATION: Until 30/6/2015 with possibility of extension


 


Main Purpose:


Provide psychological support to patients according to MSF principles and protocols in order to improve the patients’ mental health.


Train MSF clinicians to be able to recognize and refer cases of mental health. Implement and supervise the mental health component in the project.


 


Main objectives and responsibilities of the position:


·         Carry out evaluation of psychological and mental health needs of patients, elaborate a diagnosis and establish a plan of treatment.


·         Diagnose any psychological or psychiatric disorder and if necessary, refer the patient to the medical team in order to receive drug treatment.


·          Inform the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and drug treatment to follow in order to improve the patient’s condition.


·         Provide psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, and group) to patients according to MSF protocols to improve their mental health conditions.


·         Refer patients to other health professionals whenever necessary in order to provide the most appropriate treatment.


·         Assist and train staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities.


·         Collect statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities regularly.


·         Work in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure that appropriate terminology and behavior are used during sessions.


·         Inform the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective.


·         Ensure that all patient information is kept confidential.


·         Compile monthly report on mental health and provide to MTL.


Specificities:


·          Participate in planning, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of integrated mental health activity at the all the MSF facilities.


·          Carry out evaluation of psychological and mental health activities of national staff.


·          Support, guide, monitor and evaluate psychosocial counselors.


·          Participate actively in management of psychiatric patients. Participate in mental health program designing and planning, monitoring and evaluation.


·          Implement psychosocial activity for peoples with HIV/AIDS, SGBV.


 


General:


·          The responsibilities mentioned above are not exhaustive and other work can be required according to the needs of the mission.


·          Mobility is requested from MSF staff, including short term assignments from their usual place of work.


·          Part of any MSF-employee responsibilities is the attendance of trainings as per the requirements of the organisation.


·          The job description can be modified according to the evolution of the work.




·         Essential degree  in Clinical Psychology


·         2 years’ experience minimum as a Psychologist. Desirable previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries.


·         English and local language, essential.


·         Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)


·         Able to coach and supervise
