As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.


In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian Government and International Donors.


GIZ Sports for Development in Africa is looking for a qualified candidate as per the detail below:

Background


In order to help achieve development policy objectives more effectively through sport, the Sport for Development in Africa project is focusing its activities on three areas:


·         Sport is being used effectively for integrated education provision with a focus on topics such as health, violence prevention and personal development.


·         Sports infrastructure and equipment are being provided at selected locations. New sports grounds are being built and existing ones upgraded.


·         The project is building local capacities to facilitate the long-term implementation of sport for development activities. Training initiatives are delivered locally within schools, vocational colleges, sports clubs, municipal institutions, nongovernmental organisations and sports associations, enabling sports programme directors and staff to expand their knowledge of how to use and run sports facilities.


The Sport for Development in Africa project has a regional approach and most of the project activities will be implemented in the four African countries Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia and Togo. Furthermore the project will be active in at least four more African countries. Whereas the project is led from Eschborn/Germany, the project office in Ethiopia will be the hub of the project in Africa and is of high importance.

     Responsibilities


The Sport Programme officer will advise governmental- and non-governmental organisations and the project team of the regional programme sport and development in Africa, regarding implementing construction measures and designing sustainable approaches for the use of sports facilities, and on integrating sports issues into education projects for the target groups. This includes:


Identifying innovative approaches for establishing sport for development in Ethiopia, and coordinating the associated activitiesImplementing and coordinating ‘train-the-trainer’ courses in the area of sport and development, development of training material which combines sport and education components Combining sport-related education activities with other education projects and measures, and integrating sport into the work of selected governmental and non-governmental organisationsAdvising GIZ programmes and local organisations on implementing sport as an instrument of education and youth workPromoting cooperation between actors in the areas of sport and development in Ethiopia: governmental and non-governmental organisations, sport federations, private sector, communities etc.

    Other Duties/Additional Tasks


Performs other related duties as directed by the Programme Manager or the Head of Administration and Finance.




 Qualifications and Experience


University degree in sport sciences, political sciences, social sciences or humanitiesAt least 5 years work experience in the field of Sport for Development, project management, Education Sector or in the organized SportExperience in cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organisations, associations and sports structuresFamiliar with Monitoring and Evaluation of project measuresFamiliar with PR (organization of Events, compiling of PR material etc.)Very good knowledge of Amharic and English

Additional skills:


Work experience in the field Sport for Development is an advantagePractical experience in youth work, especially the promotion of young students is an  advantageExperience as a (sports) trainer and facilitator is an advantageGood writing skills for reports, fact sheets etc. are mandatoryThe ability to work independently and on your own initiativeExperience of working abroad in developing countries is an advantagehigh level of personal responsibility and motivation, willingness to travel in Ethiopia and if necessary to other African countries
