SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is a national member association to the International Federation of SOS Children’s Villages. It is non- political, not-for-profit, and non-religious social development organization focused on the well being and development of children. It was founded in 1974 and has been a development partner since then with positive outcomes in the lives of many children, families and communities.


The SOS Children’s Villages Program Jimma  are looking for a competent and able Social Workers that meet the requirements stated bellow.


Position summaryUnder the Overall supervision of the Family Based Care Coordinator, the social worker supports program development in line with the “Vision, Mission, Values”, the brand and approved strategies, policies, guidelines of the organization. Community Social worker is responsible to support children who are at risk of losing the care of their biological family which includes direct work with the children, caregivers and communities, based on the professional social work practice, ethic, values to achieve the sustainable development of the families and integration in the community. He/she is also responsible to ensure the timely completion of the case management procedures at all stages based on the individual approach and on the active participation of children, parents/caregivers.
 
General aim of the position

Ensures the holistic development of children and youths including physical and behavioralEnsure the empowerment of families in child care and protection; 
Priority tasks & responsibilities

Prepares and submits for approval long- and short-term plans for social services.Formulates updates and/or recommends policies and procedures governing the development of social service programs, internal regulations,   in an effort to help families, properly raise children and prepare them for better adult life and to become responsible members of the society.Ensures legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed and the child’s best interests are paramount.Reports child abuse cases, Provides support services, participates in investigations of abuse based on the exiting procedures;Apprehends children in immediate need of protectionProvides family counseling and supportPrepares court documents where applicable (written and verbal)/Gets the support of legal bodies for court cases.Develops and implement case plans including reviews and evaluationsFacilitates and participate in case conferencingKeep up dated data of children, youth and families.Prepare Family development and child Development planEnhance children and youth participation.Follows-up, evaluates and recommends measures to be taken in order to improve services to children.Recommends child admission criteria to Alternative child Care models.Contributes in the holistic child development of children and youth which the organization addresses in partnership with other like mined-organizations.Initiates, coordinates and provides guidance and counseling services to children and youth of target groups, in close cooperation with Educators, Youth Care Co-workers and FS community development worker.Ensures and encourages the participation of the children and youth in developing programs especially in need assessment undertakings.Collaborates with different external offices on matters of common concern for the provision of better services for children, attends workshops and meetings as assigned by the Family Based Care Program CoordinatorConduct community needs assessments with relevant groupsSupports in partnering with appropriate community resources to develop ways to meet identified needsConduct program and service evaluations with partner groups in consultation with his/her supervisorFacilitate workshops, groups, etc., as requiredAdvises care taker to take care of hygiene conditions of their family home and the compound at large.Facilitate awareness rising on HIV/AIDS, sex education, etc. for children and youth by making stratification on age, sex, etc.Prepares life skill packages such as parenting skills and facilitates or trains the families of the children.Provide counseling services including helping beneficiaries to identify problems and possible solutionsFacilitate needs fulfillment through the provision of counseling and/or referral servicesArranges, provides and coordinates the delivery of services to children and families in strong partnership with other service providers and in line with the family development plan.Keeps regular contacts with child and family during the implementation of family development plan through phone calls, home visits and meetings in programme premisesAdvises and assists care givers in implementing primary health care principles.Ensures that children receive medical attention/ first-aid services if they are ill, injured and need medical treatment, refers serious cases to clinics and follows-up referral cases to hospitals.Keeps care givers informed regarding health care issues, particularly those issues affecting Families such as family planning, vaccination, HIV/AIDS, nutrition and hygiene.Trains and aware families and the community on relevant issues as deemed necessaryPerforms other similar duties as assigned by the Family Based Care Coordinator. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The incumbent requires knowledge of social work theories, practices and procedures.The incumbent requires knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies.The incumbent requires specific knowledge in the areas of needs assessment, family dynamics, the impact of trauma, psycho-social functioning theories and practices and child protection theories, models and practices. The incumbent requires knowledge of case management, case conferencing and investigation and intervention theories and practices.The incumbent must be able to respond or assist in emergency situations and have very good interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.The incumbent must also has the knowledge of child right and UNCRCHe/she must have well developed organizational, verbal and written communications skills, interviewing and analytical skills and good computer skills.The incumbent must be flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation and be knowledgeable of the services available in the community. He/she must demonstrate sound judgment particularly in dealing with aggressive care givers and children at risk.
