As the only African country to avoid colonisation, Ethiopia is a unique and resilient country with ambitions to become a middle income economy. In order to achieve this ambitious aim, the Ethiopian government is investing in the education system to ensure a fair and quality education system is available to all. The licensing of teachers is a crucial aspect of this ambition and the teachers’ licensing advisor will play an essential role in supporting the transformation of Ethiopia’s education system.
What does the role involve?
This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the Ministry of Education to:
Review and develop the national professional standards for teachers and other educational professionals.
Develop tools and frameworks for the assessment of teachers and other educational professionals.
Develop guidelines and strategies for the successful implementation of the assessment and licensing plan.
Organise and manage systems for collating statistical data. Develop a manual and guidelines on professional standards and the assessment and licensing of teachers.
Conduct any necessary research, working with external researchers.
Develop monitoring and evaluation systems.
Develop a training manual for assessors and deliver training.
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll have experience working in licensing in the area of professional standards development and assessment and have a Masters in Education. If you have specific qualifications in Measurement and Evaluation or a related field, then this would be ideal! You’ll have experience of training and excellent facilitation skills, including experience of preparing training materials. With experience in licensing you will have a good understanding of the licensing process and the measurement and evaluation tools needed to conduct assessments. You will also have experience of designing and delivering capacity building activities to support and build your colleagues. You will be the type of person who fosters a positive and proactive learning environment around them and likes a challenge!

You’ll be based in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and an exuberant and hospitable city. We’ll ask you to commit to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
