ABOUT CUSO INTERNATIONAL
Cuso International is a non-profit development organization that works through volunteers. Each year, we
send hundreds of global citizens to work on collaborative development projects in more than 20 countries
in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. We are one of North America's leading international
development organizations that works through volunteers.
ABOUT THE PARTNER Nekemte College of Teachers Education, a teacher education institute has identified IT as an area of
priority for capacity building in order to improve the quality of education. The college hopes to strengthen
its IT systems and to build the capacity of its staff by working with a volunteer in order to provide quality
educational services. The technical support of the volunteer will enable the college to expand its IT
services, particularly in the areas of network infrastructure and of information communication technologies
(ICT).
THE VOLUNTEER'S ROLE
The volunteer will have a role of IT Trainer and Advisor in the college. The volunteer is expected to
provide IT technical assistance in supporting, maintaining and updating the ICT system. Therefore she/he
should be willing to undertake pre-departure self-research in this area.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential qualifications for this volunteer placement: • Degree in Computer Science or related area
• Minimum of two years' experience in ICT training, operation system administration (currently Windows
XP)
• Capable of developing and delivering training in ICT, including Windows XP, MS Office and Internet
• Ability to mentor local staff in the provision of basic computer introductory courses namely: (Computer
Fundamentals, Windows, Word, Excel, Communications (LAN/WAN))
• Ability to enhance computer security using anti-malware and firewall techniques
• Skills and experience in network implementation and administration (most probably Windows Server
2003)
• Hardware maintenance and troubleshooting skills
• Awareness of electrical power and other safety issues
• Knowledge and understanding of the culture and customs in Ethiopia
TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a
modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:
• Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates are expected to cover the first
$150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs).
• Travel and accommodation costs associated with five day pre-departure training course held in
Ottawa.
• Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency).
• Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and health insurance.
• Accommodation while overseas.
• A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed.
• Quarterly payments to support you in your placement
• Modest support for accompanying partners
